Vale Reg Dew

As we prepare to say our final farewell to the Godfather of Rigging Reginald Lindsay Dew – at his Celebration of Life in Sydney tomorrow, we thought we’d share this lovely article written about Reg in the About Regional by journalist Marion Williams.

Excerpt:

Reg Dew, the father of riggers, lived his life to the full. He travelled the world working on big projects and touring with the world’s biggest bands.

Reg counted David Bowie, Joe Cocker and Madonna among his friends. He worked on the 2000 Olympics’ opening and closing ceremonies, and built stages for Pope John Paul II and Pope Paul VI, as well as for American evangelist Billy Graham. Reg passed away on 5 October, aged 90.

My role at Tri-Point Rigging Services is…

When I was a kid, I wanted to be…
A Fish.
People often describe me as…
A Coconut.
My favourite movie of all time is…
Debbie Does Dallas.
Who would win a fight between Batman & Spiderman…
Wonder Woman (hate watching men in tights fight, it’s just wrong).
The strangest thing to happen on one of my projects was…
Someone stabbed themselves in the butt with their own knife.
The funniest thing to happen on one of my projects was…
Someone stabbed themselves in the butt with their own knife.
The worst thing to happen on one of my projects was…
I had to drive the forklift because someone stabbed themselves in the butt with their own knife.

Aside from being one of our resident comedians, Willie manages the preparation and maintenance of all of our equipment, for all of our projects and dry hires from our main warehouse in Sydney. Leading his team of warehouse crew, Willie has extensive knowledge of every single piece of equipment Tri-Point owns in it’s exceptionally large inventory of stock. With the best forklift skills in the biz, Tri-Point could not do what they do without him, so this is our little salute to the Fijian legend that is Willie Leong!

My role at Tri-Point Rigging Services is…
Creating 3D Renders and Technical Drawings of Truss, Rigging, Scaffolding and Staging Systems.
When I was a kid I wanted to be…
I didn’t have big dreams when I was a kid but in the 90s I came across a video tape of a futuristic looking drawing program that could produce 3D images from green lines at the local library. It looked so cool I had to give it a shot.
The best advice I have ever been given is…
Don’t make decisions without eating first.
People often describe me as…
Well-read and really obnoxious about it.
My favourite movie of all time is…
Probably the Grand Budapest Hotel, or maybe Blade Runner 1982.
My favourite artist/band of all time is…
The Memphis Group, they invented the 80s.
Three people I wish I could invite to dinner are…

If I was an animal I would be a…
My wife says I would be a cat, read into that what you will.
Most people don’t know that I…
I write a lot and I make a pretty mean calzone.
The three things I can’t live without are…
My wife, my whiteboard and the internet.
The strangest thing to happen on one of my projects…
I did some structural work on the elevator cores for Sydney Uni. A crane collapsed and fell right on top of our formwork! Luckily no one was around when it fell but there is a nice picture somewhere of a crane sticking though something I designed.
The worst thing to happen on one of my projects was…
I guess it was the time I was working in a team producing 20 tonnes of steel for a structural platform on an oil rig. It needed to be helicoptered in from shore. The steel didn’t meet their requirements so they dumped the entire load into the sea. Eek! They said it was cheaper to remake it than to helicopter it back… I would love to see there calculation on that one.

Sean has joined Tri-Point Rigging Services in our Drafting & Design Department, producing stunning 3D renders for our clients as well as technical construction drawings for engineering and construction. Sean brings a wealth of design and drafting experience to the company and we would like to take this opportunity to welcome him into the Tri-Point family!

Australian Event Awards 2016 Winners Announced

Australian Event Awards 2016 Winners Announced

The first Australian Event Awards Ceremony to take place on the Sunshine Coast kicked off with a bang this week, recognising and celebrating the best events in Australia and achievements in the industry around the world between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016.
Among this year’s winners was a balance of Event Awards veterans and first time finalists. Byron Bay Bluesfest won Best Regional Event, Ample Projects won Best Achievement in Design for their work on Be The Light For The Wild, Taronga Zoo for Vivid Sydney 2016, and Imagination took home the gong for Best Technical Achievement for their work on Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience.
It was an honour to see Opera Australia take out the award for the Best Cultural, Arts or Music Event for this year’s Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour: A Production of Turandot. We are proud to be a part of this landmark event, delivering the main stage steel & scaffold infrastructure on the waters of Sydney Harbour at Farm Cove annually since 2013.
After a classy VIP cocktail reception on the lawns, with a firework demonstration from Foti Fireworks, we headed into the beautifully decorated marquee for dinner and the awards ceremony.
Awards Partner, Apples and Pears Entertainment, provided two brilliant acts to entertain attendees. With Sarah Rowan-Dahl creating a stunning artwork through the evening as the show rolled on around her, and Kimberley Heberley’s beautiful voice providing a sweet prelude to the main course. Meanwhile, drumming outfit Junkyard Beats contributed the show-starting bang.
